Homeowners near London’s Olympic Park scandalized by unfair property charges.

The owners demand that the mayor take action on the matter.

Homeowners living in a development in East London say they are forced to pay an “unfair and unfair” fee that provides them no benefit and is likely to make their properties “unsold and non-mortgageable.”

Chobham Manor residents pay a “fixed property charge” for the maintenance of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, the site of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and now an open public space.

It is picked up by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), a mayoral department that was given the power to impose the position by Boris Johnson in April 2016, shortly before the end of his second term as mayor of London.

The payment, which for tenants is in addition to service charges, is based on the size of their homes and increases annually. For a three-bedroom property, it’s now £ 1,357 a year, almost £ 200 more than the initial rate of £ 1,159.

In the past, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized the “unfair additional costs” faced by many tenants across the city, and in his manifesto for the May 6 elections pledges to work to ensure that the capital leads the way to end this “scandal”.

While the LLDC defended it as “fair and reasonable,” a spokesman for Khan told The Guardian that he “understands the concerns raised” and that they “will be discussed.”

Chobham Manor is a 659-home development adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Each home and business on the park “farm” has to pay the fee, which increases annually in accordance with the RPI measure of inflation.

However, residents note that other people who live in close proximity to the park, for example in the East Village and Glasshouse Gardens developments, enjoy the same access, but do not have to pay.
