No planning permission required for unused buildings from September

Complete planning requests will not be required to demolish and rebuild unused buildings from September onwards in new laws set by the UK Parliament.

The new laws hope to offer new homes and revitalize urban centers across England, and allow main streets and urban centers to provide more space for new businesses to help them quickly adapt to consumers and business needs.

Homeowners will be able to build up to two additional floors.

Homeowners will also be able to add up to two additional floors to their home to create new homes or more living space for growing families through a quick approval process, with the requirement to consider the impact on neighbors and the appearance of the home extension. This hopes to reduce pressure to build on new sites and deliver more homes that fit the character of their local area, without the bureaucracy.

Housing Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said: “We are reforming the planning system and removing unnecessary bureaucracy to give small business owners the freedom they need to adapt and evolve, and to renovate our urban centers with new businesses and more houses.

These changes will help transform bricked and unused buildings safely into high-quality homes in the heart of their communities. It will mean that families can add up to two floors to their home, providing much-needed additional space for children or older relatives as their home grows.”

The new law will not be affected by decisions before COVID-19

The bars, libraries, village shops, and other essential buildings for the communities will not be covered by these flexibilities.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has said that the councils should take into account the temporary impact of COVID-19 when considering permission for the change of use, redevelopment or demolition of these buildings, and this does not will change due to new laws introduced.

This new construction regulation will take effect very soon. In this way, homeowners and property owners can begin to carry out the necessary reconstructions to adapt to their actual needs.
