UK government launches £ 150m Help to Build scheme.

This economic scheme seeks to help the British to build their own homes.

The plans, which were announced over the weekend, will provide funding under a Help to Build’ scheme to make it easier and more affordable for people to build their own homes.

In a statement, the Government said: “The ‘Help to Build’ scheme will ensure that self-build and custom homebuilding can become a realistic option to move up the housing ladder through lower deposit mortgages.”

Firm details on the scheme were scant, but the government spoke of reducing deposits to free up capital. He added: “The plan will provide an entire home equity loan, similar to the Help to Buy plan.”

“Everyone should be able to build their own home.”

Robert Jenrick, the government’s housing secretary, said: “Building your own home should not be the exclusive domain of a small number of people, but a conventional, realistic and affordable option for people across the country. That is why we are making it easier and more affordable, backed by more than £ 150 million of new government funding.”

The plans had an immediate and positive reception within the industry.

Mark Hayward, Policy Leader at Propertymark, said: “The real estate market is facing high demand right now, and making it easier for people to build their own homes will create more equity for the real estate market in the future. With a more individual choice, new homes built will be tailor-made to fit the communities of which they become a part, while also contributing to the government’s home building goals.”

The National Federation of Builders also intervened, saying it was “totally behind the government’s own and custom-built ads.”

Rico Wojtulewicz, head of housing and planning for the Home Builders Association, the housing division of the NFB, questioned whether city councils would show the same willingness as the government.

He added: “The municipalities already have mechanisms at their disposal to allow their own and personalized construction. Three years ago, our recommendations for a subdivision of the large site policy were carried forward, but they have not really taken hold yet and we are increasingly frustrated by the amount of advice that Local Development Orders use, which could divide the opportunities for self-construction and provide planning certainty.”
