Welsh Government offers £ 10 million in grants for tenants unable to pay their rent.

This scheme seeks to help tenants at risk.

A new £ 10 million grant will be introduced this month to help people in private rental housing struggling to pay rent due to the pandemic.

The Tenancy Hardship Grant is designed to assist tenants who have been behind in their rent for more than eight weeks between March 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

The grant is designed to help people stay in their homes and prevent them from losing their tenancy.

Climate Change Minister Julie James, responsible for housing, said: “Throughout the pandemic, we have taken unprecedented steps to address homelessness and help people stay in their homes.

“The new Hardship Rental Grant is the latest in this range of measures and will help people in privately rented homes who have fallen behind in their rent due to the pandemic.

“I understand the stress and worry that people will experience if they fall behind on their rent. We also know that once someone falls behind with their rent, it can become increasingly difficult to catch up without support.

“We also know that if they become homeless, the impact on them and their families is enormous, as is the cost to public services of dealing with homelessness.

“This grant helps prevent homelessness by helping people deal with their rent arrears and keep their rents.”

People living in private rented housing who have incurred rent arrears due to the pandemic may be eligible for the grant. The rent arrears may have resulted from a loss of income due to leave, a reduction in work, or because they could only claim legal sick pay when they were ill with Covid-19.

The grant, which local authorities will administer, will be open to tenants who do not receive housing-related benefits. It will replace the Lease Savings Loan, which was introduced in December 2020. Anyone who gets a loan will have that loan converted to a grant.

Eligible individuals can register their interest with their local authority immediately, and grants will be processed beginning in mid-July.
