“Building Biodiversity Net Gain into Housing”
The Coronavirus pandemic has forced the UK government to establish a period of lockdown and social distancing measures. These factors have caused millions of citizens to be confined to their homes without the possibility of recreation.
This period has been much more difficult to handle psychologically for people who do not have access to green spaces in their homes. It has been confirmed that green spaces can reduce people’s mental and physical stress, something very important during this time of crisis.
“We need more green spaces in our houses.”
Ben Kite, managing director of Ecological Planning & Research Ltd (EPR), said: “The lockdown caused by the Coronavirus has made us reevaluate our need to have green areas in our homes. It has become clear that it is not a whim but a necessity; green spaces help us protect our physical and mental well-being. We can live with wildlife that is returning to our streets and urban spaces.”
“Real estate development companies should review their plans and look for an alternative solution that allows us to have a greater number of green areas in our houses. It will be difficult, especially in highly populated urban areas where population density does not allow this type of construction. However, there is no reason not to try.”
“These companies should not view this issue as a competition, but rather as a solution for all citizens in UK urban areas. Residential development should be a priority after the pandemic ends and in the years to come.”
“The new environmental law will help us.”
“Thanks to this new bill, residential developers will have to demonstrate that biodiversity has been improved in all their new projects, we need to see a significant increase in the number of green areas in urban centers. It must be our priority, and we must organize ourselves and ask the government to regulate the construction of green areas more effectively. It is possible, and with the new law we will have a greater chance of this happening.”
EPR recently released a report seeking to assist home builders in building better biodiversity zones for their residential projects.
The report called “Building Biodiversity Net Gain into Housing” focuses on describing the strategic aspect that developers must take to offer a greater number of green areas in the communities, and in which way it is beneficial for both wildlife and the people.
