WASPI Women Seek Action as State Pension Age Investigation Nears End

An ongoing investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) into changes made to the State Pension age is set to conclude early this year. Conservative MP John Penrose urges the UK Government to reveal a timeline for a redress scheme for WASPI women impacted by these changes ahead of the imminent release of the Ombudsman’s final report.

Potential Compensation for 1950s-born Women

The Ombudsman has confirmed that recommendations to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will apply to “everyone who has been similarly affected.” This could potentially lead to compensation for approximately 3.6 million women born in the 1950s, who, according to figures from the WASPI campaign, have been awaiting the outcome for five years.

MP John Penrose’s Concerns

Addressing Parliament, Mr Penrose highlighted the Ombudsman’s conclusion of official maladministration related to the Women Against State Pension Inequality Campaign. He expressed anticipation of an injustice being found in many cases and emphasized the need for the Government to provide details of a redress scheme for parliamentary debate and approval.

Government’s Response

Responding to Mr Penrose, Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt acknowledged the significance of the matter. She assured that the relevant Minister and the Ombudsman’s office would be informed of the concerns and pledged to seek an update on timing from the Minister.

Procedural Delays and Current Status

The PHSO investigation, initiated in 2018, faced delays due to the complexity of the case. Legal challenges and a review of 650 pieces of evidence further prolonged the process. The provisional views on injustice resulting from maladministration during stage one have been shared with complainants, MPs, and the DWP. The publication of the final report is pending comments on these provisional views.

Concerns over Injustice and Timing

The delay in the final report has raised concerns about potential injustices. Mr. Penrose’s call for a redress scheme emphasizes the need for the Government to act promptly, considering the scale of redress that may be required.

The ongoing developments in this investigation continue to draw attention to the challenges faced by WASPI women and the importance of addressing their concerns through a comprehensive redress scheme.
