Gove Faces Pressure as Investigation into Alleged Corruption at Tees Freeport Lacks Deadline

Gove ordered the review but declined calls to involve the National Audit Office, opting for an independent panel. MPs express frustration over delays, especially with the May mayoral elections approaching in Teesside. The government initially aimed to complete the investigation last summer, but successive delays pushed the timeline to this spring.

Under questioning from MPs on the Commons business committee, Gove refused to commit to a timeline for the inquiry’s completion. Recent reports reveal that Teesworks reported a tripled net profit of £54m last year. Questions are raised about the venture’s transfer to majority private ownership, with concerns about the acquisition of 110 acres of public land at £1 an acre by a company 90% owned by associates of Lord Houchen. Liam Byrne, Labour chair of the business committee, questions whether taxpayers secured the best value in these transactions.

While facing scrutiny, Gove expresses full confidence in Mayor Ben Houchen, describing him as a “first-rate public servant” responsible for the economic transformation of the Tees Valley. Critics continue to press for transparency and a timely resolution to the investigation.
