WASPI Women Await DWP Compensation in Coming Weeks

Millions of women may soon receive clarity regarding compensation for alterations to their state pension eligibility, with MPs indicating that a decision could arrive “within weeks.” The Women Against State Pension Inequality Campaign (WASPI) has been at the forefront, advocating for justice for approximately 3.8 million women whose retirement plans were disrupted by these amendments.

The Fight for Justice:

During a recent debate at Westminster Hall, MPs expressed outrage over the lack of proposed compensation for those impacted WASPI women, labelling it a “disgrace.” Women born in the 1950s were informed of extended waits for their state pension due to changes enacted in 2010 to align pension ages between genders. The WASPI campaign contends that this transition was executed unfairly and without sufficient notice.

Parliamentary Debate Highlights Urgency:

According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has found the Department for Work and Pensions guilty of maladministration and is investigating the extent of the harm caused. Labour MP Beth Winter emphasized during the Westminster Hall debate that a decision on potential compensation is anticipated “in weeks.”

Anticipation Builds for Ombudsman’s Report:

Beth Winter elaborated, stating, “In July 2021, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s stage 1 report identified clear maladministration in the DWP’s communication of state pension age changes. We await the final stages of the report, which will evaluate the impact of this maladministration and make recommendations on compensation. We anticipate these findings in the coming weeks.”

MP Mick Whitley echoed the sentiment, questioning the prolonged wait for financial redress and emphasizing the urgency of the matter. Calls for widespread compensation have been made, with figures such as £10,000 being suggested. Paul Maynard, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Pensions, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, assuring that the Government is committed to reviewing the Ombudsman’s final report thoroughly.
