Public Transport Unions Resume Talks After Rejecting Pay Offer

The main public transport trade unions in Northern Ireland have opted to resume discussions with Translink management in light of an ongoing pay dispute, following the rejection of what was deemed an “inadequate” pay offer.

Renewed Negotiations Amidst Discontent:

UNITE, GMB, and SIPTU, representing public transport workers, have collectively decided to re-engage with Translink management to seek a resolution to the ongoing pay disagreement. This decision comes after members of all three unions voted decisively to decline the previous pay offer.

Union Members Reject Offer as Inadequate:

Translink management’s proposal of a 5% wage increase along with a one-off payment of £1,500 for the 2023/24 financial year was met with dissatisfaction among bus and rail workers. The rejection, with approximately 70% majorities across the board, underscores the dissatisfaction with the proposed terms.

Previous Strikes and Impact on Public Services:

The rejection of the pay offer follows earlier strike actions taken by train and bus drivers, leading to disruptions in public transport services across Northern Ireland, particularly during the holiday season. Additionally, January witnessed one of the largest strikes in the region’s history, drawing participation from various public sectors, including Translink workers.

The planned 72-hour strike last month was called off following the promise of a pay offer. However, with the proposed terms rejected, negotiations have resumed in hopes of finding a mutually acceptable resolution to the ongoing dispute.

As talks recommence, both sides will seek to address workers’ concerns while ensuring the continuity of essential public transport services for the benefit of Northern Ireland’s residents.
