MP Urges £10,000 Compensation for WASPI Women

SNP MP Alan Brown from Kilmarnock and Loudoun has called upon the Government to provide £10,000 in compensation to WASPI women across Britain who have been affected by historical injustices regarding the state pension system.

Historical Injustices

Following the implementation of the 1995 State Pension Age Act, which aimed to align pension thresholds with those of men, approximately 3.8 million women born between April 6, 1950, and April 5, 1960, found themselves in a financially disadvantaged position due to the abrupt introduction of this age hike.

Campaign for Justice

The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign has been at the forefront of efforts to rectify these long-standing injustices, advocating for fair compensation for affected women.

MP’s Plea

In addressing the House of Commons, Mr Brown highlighted the severe impact these injustices have had on countless women’s retirement plans. He condemned the lack of resolution from Westminster and emphasized the urgent need for compensation, particularly as many affected individuals are now in advanced age or have passed away without receiving any restitution.

Call for Compensation

Mr Brown argued for a minimum Level Five banding of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) remedy scales, suggesting that payments of £10,000 or more would be the most suitable form of redress for the affected WASPI women.

Government Oversight

Three years prior, an investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) found that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) had failed to make reasonable decisions regarding the dissemination of information to women impacted by pension changes.
