Government must pay furloughed workers before April 30

The Coronavirus pandemic has caused great chaos globally, the UK has suffered great damage especially in the labor and industrial area, around nine million workers could be fired and remain vulnerable to the whole crisis generated by COVID-19.

Faced with this terrible obstacle for the industry, the UK government has had to find alternatives to mitigate the damage caused by the Coronavirus to the millions of workers who have been affected. One of these initiatives is to pay 80% of these workers’ salaries while the pandemic continues.

“They must start paying before April 30”

Richard Beresford, a member of the National Federation of Builders, said: “The Coronavirus has affected the construction industry in a very serious way, the vast majority of construction workers are unable to work due to the emergency measures that the government has imposed. It is not the workers’ fault, but they must comply with quarantine and social distancing.”

“A large number of construction companies have been forced to close their operations. These workers have been fired or are about to. The UK government announced the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and said it would start paying starting on the 20th. March, but more than 20 days have passed and the payments have still not been made.”

“However, we’re confident that the government will be able to make the payments before the 30th of this month. There has been a huge increment in applications for these subsidies and we understand that the government may take a while to comply with this; they are doing their best effort to combat this situation, we are grateful that they have created the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.”

“The CJRS will help many workers”

Richard Beresford also praised the UK government’s willingness to always act on behalf of workers.

“The government has acted very efficiently during this crisis; the measures they have implemented have allowed us to stay away from risk. Although some of those measures have affected the commercial industry, we know that it is for the good of the entire population.

“Construction companies need to have the cash flow to be able to pay their employees, but due to the Coronavirus, this has been almost impossible. We know that a large number of workers will be fired, but with the help offered by the government they will be able to endure this crisis until it’s over.”

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme is one of the many initiatives that the UK government has implemented to reduce the damage caused by the pandemic. About 9 million workers are expected to benefit from this measure.
