Government of Wales pledges £ 250m for 20,000 new homes in 2021-2022.

The government of Wales is looking to give the Welsh housing market a big boost.

The government of Wales has doubled its spending on social rental housing, committing an initial £ 250 million in 2021/22 for 20,000 new low-carbon homes. The ambitious plans will address the growing demand for housing and the climate crisis, providing affordable and good-quality green housing to those in need.

All houses will be built to bold new quality and environmental standards with the goal of some of the inventory going beyond net-zero and producing more energy than it uses. A further announcement on this is expected before the end of this month.

Visiting one of Wales’s first ‘energy positive’ social housing schemes today, Climate Change Minister responsible for housing Julie James said the Rhiw Cefn Gwlad scheme of Wales & West Housing in Bridgend was’ an example ‘for developers, housing associations, and tips to follow.

The 14 home developments have used the latest technical innovations in renewable energy, from integrated exhaust air heat pumps with mechanical ventilation to large photovoltaic solar roof systems coupled with a Tesla battery system.

In January of this year, residents who moved in received their first negative energy bill in March, meaning that excess energy generated by their homes has already been pumped into the national grid.

The Minister said: “Hearing how much Cai, Allyn, and other residents have been saving on home bills today, and the difference their high-quality new home has made to their well-being, reinforces my confidence that our ambitious housing plan is going to make a real difference for the people of Wales. We have doubled our money, committing a quarter of a billion pounds this financial year, so that we can go ahead and build 20,000 new low carbon rental homes.”
