The cost of moving in the UK continues to rise.
Moving companies in the UK have increased the cost of moving.
The cost of moving home increases as moving companies are forced to raise prices due to difficulties in hiring drivers.
According to operators, some moving companies have raised prices by as much as 25%, in line with wage increases applied to retain and attract workers amid stiff competition for those with a specialized truck license.
Angus Elphinstone, CEO and founder of AnyVan, said prices in the industry had risen 10-15% as strong demand for moving vans continued past a peak in June before the end of the stamp duty holiday.
He said that demand rose 200% in June and that interest in moving home had not decreased as much as expected since then. “In our experience, the shortage is not just due to overwhelming demand from moving workers,” he said. “We have seen that after Brexit, several moving teams left the UK for Europe, causing a drop in the number available.”
Several moving company operators confirmed that they had been forced to increase prices for customers by 10-25% and were struggling to keep up with demand due to a shortage of drivers.
“Moving companies have offered salary increases of up to 25% to attract new staff.”
Mark Chudley of the moving company Chudley International said he had increased wages by at least 25% to attract more drivers but could still do about half the jobs he would expect at that time of year due to the driver shortage.
“There is still more demand than capacity,” he said. “In August, we will also have less staff during the holidays, and I think it will continue for the rest of the year, although it will not be as bad as in June.”
Cicero Almeida, who runs Dumond, a South London-based moving company, said he could have done at least 30% more work if the drivers had been available. It had increased wages by 25-30% but said the industry struggled to compete for skilled workers.
“Heavy vehicle drivers have many options where to work. They can go to make deliveries or drive garbage trucks or cement trucks where they don’t have to lift heavy objects,” he said.
