WASPI Women May Receive £10,000 Compensation

The ongoing battle for justice by the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign could potentially result in significant compensation for impacted women. After enduring years of uncertainty and financial insecurity due to changes in the state pension age, affected women might finally receive a payout of £10,000 each.

Background

The WASPI campaign has tirelessly advocated for women who faced disadvantage when the women’s pension age was raised from 60 to 65, aligning with men’s retirement age. This adjustment shattered many’s retirement dreams, particularly impacted women born on or after April 6, 1950. Shockingly, around 3.6 million women born before March 1950 were only made aware of these crucial changes in 2009, significantly altering their retirement plans.

Recent Developments

The campaign persists despite further increases in the state pension age, from 65 to 66, and anticipated bumps between 2026 and 2028. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) faced criticism from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s (PHSO) inquiry for inadequate communication, resulting in accusations of “maladministration.”

Campaigner’s Perspective

Angela Madden, chair of the WASPI group, expressed frustration over older women feeling “cancelled” by the government. However, she voiced optimism as MPs now earnestly consider their case. Madden emphasized the years of uncertainty and stress endured by WASPI women due to financial insecurity and depression stemming from the sudden pension age adjustments.

Compensation Proposal

The PHSO inquiry, informed by the All Party Parliamentary Group on State Pension Inequality for Women, suggested level six compensation, beginning at £10,000 per affected woman. WASPI’s chair argued for this payment to accompany any financial losses incurred. Scottish National Party MP Alan Brown supported this proposal as the “most appropriate” response.

Long-standing Grievances

WASPI highlighted that since 2015, approximately 270,000 affected women have passed away without receiving any compensation, resulting in government savings of around £4 billion. Despite the 1995 Pensions Act, it took 14 years for information about changes to reach women born between April 6, 1951, and April 5, 1953. Some women were only notified of retirement age increases a year before their planned retirement date, while others received minimal notice.

Government’s Response

A DWP spokesperson reiterated the government’s decision to equalize the state pension age for men and women over 25 years ago. Despite legal challenges, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court rulings, successive governments have upheld this decision.
